There are several types of medication used to Treat Depression. These drugs improve symptoms of depression by increasing certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. It is felt that these brain chemicals can improve one’s mood.
Major types of Ani Depressants include the following:
1. Tri cyclic antidepressants. (TCAs)
Tri cyclic depressants are some of the first medications used to treat depression. They primarily affect the communication of two chemical messengers (neuro transmitters) norepinephrine and serotinin, in the brain. Despite the benefits of these medications, it is possible that they have more side effects so they are not usually the first drugs used.
2. Monoamine oxdase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Monoamine oxdase inhibitors are a form of anti depressants. This category of drugs are most effective for people who do not respond to other treatments. It is possible that certain foods like cheese, beverages like wine and medications can interact with this category of medications therefore a strict diet restrictions. For this reason this classification usually are not initially used.
3. Selective seretonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
SSRis are a newer form of anti depressants. This classification of drugs work by altering the amount of chemical in the brain called serotonin
4. Serotonin and norepinephrine reputake inhibitors (SNRIs)
This classification of medication are a newer form of anti depressants. They treat depression by increasing availability of the brain chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine.
